Village School

3rd Grade String Program

 

Students attend a 45-minute group lesson one day a week, after school, in the Village Orchestra room. Instruments available to learn include the violin, viola, and cello. Lessons are held on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons. Students will learn the basics of left hand and bow hold technique and will perform in 3 concerts during the school year.

 

Village Chorus

Chorus is for kids who enjoy singing, want to sing in a group and want to get better at singing.

Choral students have the opportunity to audition for the Northeast District Treble Chorus (grades 4 and 5), Massachusetts All-State Treble Chorus (grades 4, 5, and 6) and Northeast Junior District Music Festival (6th grade boys only). These extracurricular opportunities meet after school.

Village Orchestra


Village Orchestra is designed to prepare string players with the skills and techniques necessary to be successful in Marblehead’s other orchestras. Students in the orchestra have the option of learning the violin, viola, cello, or double bass. Orchestra students have the opportunity to perform a variety of musical styles! The orchestra has many performance opportunities including the All-Strings Concert …which features string players in grades 3-12 performing on the same stage! Lessons are required for all orchestra members. The orchestra rehearses during each grade’s EDU block.

Village Band


Village Band is designed to prepare woodwind, brass, and percussionists with the skills and techniques necessary to be successful in Marblehead’s other bands. The band plays a variety of music including marches, jazz, rock and roll, blues, famous theme songs, and classical music. If you join band you will be in several concerts including the Spring Concert, Holiday Pops Concert, and many others! Band includes instrument lessons during the school day as well as an ensemble rehearsal each week during your EDU time. Students who are active in the band and orchestra program also have the option of joining our extra-curricular Jazz Band. Band rehearses during each grade’s EDU block. Instrumental Music Lessons


Instrument Lessons occur once a week, during the student’s general music class, for 45 minutes. Lessons are offered to 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students who are enrolled in Band or Orchestra. Lessons will develop fundamental elements of playing the various woodwind, brass, percussion, and string instruments. Students will develop skills in music reading, rehearsing, practicing, and performing both as soloists and in the ensemble setting. Lessons are designed to be interesting and helpful for each particular student to ensure his or her progress and success.

Village Jazz Band


Jazz Band is an audition-based extracurricular music program for participating band and orchestra students which provides an opportunity for students to develop technical performance skills and to expand their knowledge and understanding of music. Music styles include jazz, popular rock, and Big Band swing. The Jazz Band is an extracurricular ensemble and rehearses on Thursday afternoons from October-June. Solo and Duet Concerts


The Solo & Duet Recital Series is an opportunity for all students at Village School to show their musical talents -whether on an instrument or vocally. Students participate in an audition, individualized coaching sessions with the Village music faculty, practice stage and microphone technique in the dress rehearsal, and perform in an evening recital on the Village stage.

Village Musical


Every year, Village School puts up a musical featuring students from all grades. This is an after-school commitment that allows students to come together to put on a show for the community. The Musical is an extracurricular ensemble and rehearses on Monday & Thursday afternoons from November-March. For more info, visit the Theatre website.

Theater in Motion


The theater class at Village explores various aspects of theater arts from improvisation to memorized performance, using theater games and activities designed to get students up and moving. This class is not a requirement for the Village School Musical and will not affect the casting of the show. Theater in Motion rehearses during the 4th grade and 6th grade EDU blocks.

Village Chamber Group


The MVMS Orchestra is open to all continuing string students in the 7th and 8th Grade. Throughout the course of the year, students prepare for three concerts in which they demonstrate the honing of skills they have learned at Village, and the addition of more advanced skills that will help them prepare for membership in the MHS Orchestra.

MVMS Orchestra

The MVMS Orchestra is open to all continuing string students in the 7th and 8th Grade. Throughout the course of the year, students prepare for three concerts in which they demonstrate the honing of skills they have learned at Village, and the addition of more advanced skills that will help them prepare for membership in the MHS Orchestra.

 

MVMS Mixed Chorus

The MVMS mixed chorus is open to all students and serves as an opportunity for them to express their passion for music through singing. Young singers can expect to experience a varied repertoire while enhancing musicianship through practice, performance and theoretical studies.

MVMS Select Chorus

The MVMS Select Chorus is an award winning chamber sized treble choir for active chorus members who are serious about taking group singing to the next level. The repertoire ranges from secular and non-secular music, pop, a cappella and more. Participation is by audition only and the level of student expectations and commitment is high.

Ovations-Boys Group

Formed in the fall of 2007, The Ovations are the middle school’s first all boys singing group. The group meets once a week after school and performs a variety of repertoire ranging from 1950’s doo-wop to the hits of today. They perform at all MVMS choral concerts and other venues throughout the school year.

7th Grade Concert Band

The 7th Grade Concert Band is open to all instrumental students enrolled at MVMS.  Rehearsals occur on Monday, Tuesday and Friday during the Performing Arts block.  The 7th Grade Concert Band will perform at the Holiday Concert, the All-Bands Concert, and the Night of Excellence. 

8th Grade Concert Band

The 8th Grade Concert Band is open to all instrumental students enrolled at MVMS. Rehearsals occur on Monday, Tuesday and Friday during the Performing Arts block. The 8th Grade Concert Band will perform at the Holiday Concert, the All-Bands Concert, and the Night of Excellence.

The Middle School Jazz Band

The middle school Jazz Band is open to all instrumental students enrolled in MVMS.  There is not audition to join the middle school Jazz Band.  Rehearsals occur on Tuesdays after school from 3:00-4:30 beginning in December.  The middle school Jazz Band will perform at the Town-Wide Jazz Concert and the annual Night of Excellence.  Additionally, the middle school Jazz Band will perform at the UNH Jazz Festival and the MAJE state middle school jazz festival.

The Middle School Honors Concert Band

The middle school Honors Concert Band will be open to all students in the 7th & 8th grade band program who successfully pass an audition.  Rehearsals will be on Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 pm (see the attached schedule) in the middle school band room.  The middle school Honors Concert Band will perform at the All-Bands Concert and Middle School Night of Excellence.  Additionally, the Honors Concert Band will be the only middle school band ensemble that will perform at the MICCA Concert Band Festival and the annual trip to Music in the Parks.

Marblehead High School

Mixed Choir

This is a full-year course and is open to all interested students in grades 11 and 12. Men of all grades (9-12) are encouraged to take this course. Whether you have sung all your life or have no experience whatsoever, Mixed Choir is the place for you! A variety of musical styles from classical to contemporary will be rehearsed and performed. Vocal technique, ensemble skills, and music literacy are taught through varied repertoire that includes jazz, classical, world, and contemporary genres. The Women’s and Mixed Choirs perform at school concerts and community events.

There is no audition for the CP1 level. Honors level auditions occur during Mid-Term exams.

Women's Choir

This is a full-year course open to all female Marblehead High School students. Whether you have sung all your life or have no experience whatsoever, Women’s Choir is the place for you! Repertoire may include Western art music (sacred and secular), folk and multicultural music, vocal jazz, pop and musical theatre. There will be a special emphasis on great works written for women’s voices. The Women’s and Mixed Choirs perform at school concerts and community events.

Chamber Choir - Luminiscense

Students in the Chamber Choir will sing in one of two select a cappella groups: Luminescence or the Jewel Tones. The Chamber Choir meets after school and requires a significant time commitment including evening and weekend performances. The group performs at school concerts as well as numerous community events. While there is heavy emphasis on contemporary a cappella music, the Chamber Choir will also perform choral pieces as one ensemble. The challenging repertoire requires independence and advanced ensemble singing skills. Students will complete required reading assignments and lead one warm-up per quarter.

Grizzly Freakin’ Man Singers

Student run, men’s A cappella group. An audition is required but all are accepted. The group performs at in-school events as well as local events.

Serendipity

Student run, women’s A cappella group. An audition is required but all are accepted. The group performs at in-school events as well as local events.

Gospel Choir

The purpose of this group is to gather students from all backgrounds and cultures to sing soulful songs and express yourself creatively through the direction of the Marblehead Gospel Coordinator, Donovan (DJ) McLean from the Berklee College of Music.

Concert Band

Concert Band is open to all interested continuing instrumental students. Music from a variety of musical eras and styles will be rehearsed and performed. The band will participate in multiple school concerts, and music festivals throughout the school year. Rehearsal etiquette, performance participation, band projects and performance assessments are used to determine the student’s grade.

Jazz Band

Jazz Band is open to all interested instrumentalist musicians. Music from a variety of jazz and rock/pop genres will be studied. The Jazz Band participates in various school concerts, special concerts and music festivals throughout the year. Participation in Concert Band is preferred, but not required. This course meets before school on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Jazz Combo

Jazz Combo is open to all interested instrumentalist musicians. The Jazz Combo participates in various concerts throughout the year. Participation in Jazz Band is preferred, but not required.

Marching Band

Marching Band is open to all interested students. The Marching Band will participate in various marching band competitions during the fall competitive season, as well as home football games and special band festivals such as UMass Band Day. The Marching Band rehearses on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:30 and Saturday mornings from 9:00-12:00.

Drama Club

A place to explore your theatrical interests! Participate in Drama Club’s Improv Days, Open Mic Night, and trips to see shows in the Greater Boston Area and even NYC! Club meets every other Friday in the Chorus Room.

Shakespeare Club

For students who live, breathe, and eat Shakespeare, the Club gathers each Thursday in Room A308 to tell tales of the Bard. Open and affirming group that welcomes new thespians to the fold. Only a passion for iambic pentameter required.

Guitar Club

Learn riffs, licks and songs on the guitar with your peers in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. The Club meets Mondays from 3:00-4:00pm in Room C107.

Tri-M Music Honor Society

International music honor society for juniors & seniors in music; applications are available and due in the spring for the following school year. Tri-M strives to promote music in our schools, serve the community, and raise money for scholarships.

Dance Team

Open to MHS students by audition only. Dance Team draws from the population who has studied dance. Students perform at school events including basketball games, Senior Show, etc.
